Bangkok: Flower Markets in Chinatown

So...this is more of a mini-blog, as it just covers an odd morning spent in Chinatown’s markets. The afternoon and evening are coming in a separate blog.

Today, I rather had to drag a reluctant Philip to see some more of Bangkok. I’d heard about flower and fresh markets that were worth a look near the river in Chinatown, and decided it was worth a look.

The best way to travel!

We were never entirely sure we found the market we were looking for, as the map I had seen of it was obviously out of date as there was a traffic interchange where I thought there was a fresh market. I still found plenty of market stalls, but had the lingering sense I had missed the actual market centre….

And there were of course lots and lots of flowers….

In amongst the stalls laden with flowers, we also stumbled across a temple that wasn’t marked in Philip’s guide book. It really should be, as it was stunning.

There just may be some editing on this photo...a little...OK I edited the fuck out of it, but it looks good right?

By now, we were tiring of temples and markets, and so shamelessly we sat in Starbucks for half an hour with some cool drinks.

The plan was then to head to Banglamphu or Dusit, but our plans were scuppered by first catching the wrong boat that dropped us short of our target, and second the heavens opened whilst neither of us had any waterproofs. So we hopped straight onto a boat back, and spent the afternoon lounging and shopping.

I found it particularly depressing to find a department store that stocked entire ranges of Waitrose products, meaning my plan to bring British sweets as presents for Couchsurfers was completely pointless. It is safe to say they very quickly went in the bin.
